The Transnational Librarian-Scholar-Aesthete

Dr. Lashley lived a life spanning continents. With confirmed sojourns in Canada, the United States, England, the British Virgin Islands, Trinidad, in addition to his many years of cultural service and intellectual engagement across Jamaica, Lashley’s contributions begin in the Caribbean and extend outwards into diaspora.

If the intention is to account for the breadth of Dr. Lashley’s contributions to Caribbean studies, and it is true that his contributions emerge transnationally, then this work of accounting requires meticulous investigation and documentation of these contributions. One method by which we might better visualize these verified and documented contributions is through the use of an interactive timeline.

Users of the timeline project will encounter personal facts about Lashley’s life as a student, a librarian, a professor, a writer, an editor, a public servant, and more. And while there is much to be recovered regarding his life’s work (we still know very little about his time spent in England), the timeline project is one attempt to illuminate for the public the reach of Lashley’s accomplishments in the mid-to-late twentieth century.

The timeline presented below is a work in progress, however, users are invited to interact with this digital resource for quick insights and comprehensive record-keeping related to what we do know with certainty were Dr. Lashley’s contributions to the then emerging realm of Caribbean studies.

We encourage users to write to the project leads with questions and/or new insights related to current and future iterations of the timeline initiative.
